Union of BC Indian Chiefs Calls for Richard Pound's Resignation
UBCIC Supports Terres en Vues Complaint, Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador and McGill Staff

Grand Chief Stewart Phillip stated today, "The Union of BC Indian Chiefs fully supports Ghislain Picard Chief of the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador in their call for the resignation of Mr. Richard Pound as Chancellor of McGill University."

On August 9, Richard Pound provided the following quote during a La Presse interview when asked about the potential embarrassment of holding the Olympic Games in China, with China's human rights record: "It shouldn't be forgotten that 400 years ago was a country of savages, with barely 10,000 European inhabitants, whereas in China, has been established for 5,000 years." Mr. Pound has since stated his use of "les sauvages" was a historical reference and that the growing controversy is "manufactured."

Grand Chief Phillip further stated "The UBCIC finds Mr. Pound's attempt to deflect the seriousness of his blatantly racist remarks as clumsy, insincere and completely unacceptable."

"A man of Mr. Pound's stature and experience should have known better," concluded Grand Chief Phillip. "As a measure of genuine remorse and reconciliation, Mr. Pound must resign."
