UBCIC Congratulates and Commends Musqueam First Nation in Reaching a Significant Agreement

(Coast Salish Territory/Vancouver) - The Union of BC Indian Chiefs congratulates Musqueam First Nation in reaching a court ordered agreement with the Province of BC over their traditional territories - UBC Golf Course, Pacific Spirit Park and the Bridgeport Casino lands.

"Clearly, the Musqueam First Nation has ably demonstrated that the First Nations of British Columbia will no longer stand idly by while their land rights are trampled by business, industry or any level of government," indicated Union of BC Indian Chiefs, President Grand Chief Stewart Phillip. "The Musqueam First Nation has, once again, made a critically important contribution to the ongoing legal battle between First Nations, Canada and BC. We are grateful for their valuable contribution."

In their legal case, the Musqueam First Nation, sought to block the transfer of lands (known as the UBC Golf Course lands) from the Crown to the University of British Columbia because the Crown had not fulfilled its legal obligation to consult and accommodate Musqueam First Nation.

Grand Chief Phillip concluded that, "We find it unfortunate that, in this day and age, we must still rely on the Court to force government to do what they out to have done in the first place in terms of fully respecting, recognizing and accommodating our land rights."
