Phillip Paul: The hardship and injury have been both to the spirit and to the
body. To the spirit in the loss of dignity consequent on being deprived of
former freedoms and rights and made dependent upon the edict and the largess of
an alien authority and to the body in physical poverty and degradation resulting
from the loss of a means of physical livelihood and a way of life not remotely
compensated for by the meagre handouts of cash and services ordained by the
white occupier.
