UBCIC Announces New Member of the UBCIC Executive

Press Release
June 3, 2009
(Vancouver/Coast Salish Territory – June 3, 2009) Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, President of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC), stated today “It is truly my honor to announce that Chief Bob Chamberlin, Kwicksutaineuk/Ah-Kwa-Mish First Nation, has been acclaimed by the UBCIC Chiefs Council as Secretary-Treasurer of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs. I believe Chief Chamberlin with his political experience at the local, provincial, national and most recently at the international level, with the issue of fish farms, will greatly complement and empower the work of the UBCIC.”

Chief Robert Shintah, Vice-President of the UBCIC, said, “I welcome Chief Chamberlin and having worked with him, I know he is deeply committed to his community especially on the provincial policies and federal legislation that continue to ignore our Aboriginal Title and Rights.”

Chief Chamberlin accepted the challenge and remarked “First Nations are frustrated as they confront many issues such as those arising from Children and Families, the environmental and cultural impact of salmon fish farms or to ensure safe drinking water for their community. As chief, I hear these troubling concerns of people in my community and their concerns are identical to all First Nations. My involvement as part of the UBCIC Executive will allow me to carry those concerns directly to government and to hold government to account on the promises found in the New Relationship.”

Grand Chief Phillip concluded, "On behalf of the UBCIC Chiefs Council and staff, I gratefully acknowledge the hard work of Lynda Price during her tenure as Secretary-Treasurer. Her insightful contributions are always welcome and I look forward to working with her in her future endeavours."
